Summer traditions

Growing up in southern RI, we had wild blueberry bushes that grew right on our property.  Friends would come over to help us pick the bushes clean. My mom makes THE most phenomenal blueberry cake in the world, so fresh blueberries were put to good use.

Of course, Steve & I have never lived in the country. Luckily for us, there's a fantastic little blueberry farm just a 15 minute ride away.  This is the third year that I've taken the kids picking--now it's our tradition.

Here's Maddie. She's a serious picker. Focused, steady--she picks almost as many as me. :)

Eli & Patience like hunting for the BIG blueberries--we call them "juggernauts." That started 2 years ago. We were picking at this farm, and found just a ginormous blueberry. "It's a juggernaut!" we exclaimed.  And cracked up. And it stuck. :)

The plastic bags in the buckets prevent the lovely plunking sound (think: Blueberries for Sal), but it's still so satisfying to watch the bucket fill up!

Success! In just over an hour, we got 16 lbs. of blueberries, which ended up being about 40 cups.  Not bad at all!
