Something new

I made homemade laundry detergent!  I'm so excited about this, because I've been wanting to try it for ages, but couldn't find one of the key ingredients, washing soda.  I finally called Arm & Hammer, and they gave me the name of a local chain that sold it (a store, I might add, that I frequent--I had been looking everywhere, I guess I thought I had already checked there!).

I found the recipe at www.thriftyfun.com .  It calls for 1 cup of grated laundry bar soap, 1/2 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup borax.  I quadrupled the recipe, using these ingredients:

(A rather hilarious side-note, at least to me & my family, is that when my sister and I were younger, we played soccer, and our team was the Borateam Mulekickers--sponsered by none other than the borax brand above! Goooo, Mulekickers!)

You only need to use 1-2 Tablespoons of detergent per load, and so far so good.  I love the fresh scent, and the batch I made should last quite a while!

  1. Do you still use it? I hate commercial laundry detergents, most of them, anyway.

  2. Some of the time--I don't always have time to make it.
