Story of the Day 9/26/11

Make Way for Ducklings (Viking Kestrel picture books)

Make Way for Ducklings is a Caldecott Medal winning book by Robert McCloskey.  This book was one of the first inductees into the Picture Book Hall of Fame. (I didn't even know there was a Picture Book Hall of Fame!)

This story is also included in the Five in a Row curriculum.

Make Way for Ducklings follows Mr. and Mrs. Mallard as they look for a place to make a nest, settling finally on a small island in the Charles River in Boston, MA. They have 8 ducklings (Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack!) who learn quickly to obey their mama.  Mrs. Mallard then takes them on the possibly perilous journey to the Public Garden (with the help of Michael the policeman) to meet Mr. Mallard.  All's well that ends well!  A super sweet story!

If you like this book, definitely check out this Robert McCloskey Treasury! They are all gems, each and every one.
